The Forgotten First Ladies of the Ring
This is a knockout of a documentary that came out in 2004 about the women who bucked tradition and decided to become wrestlers in the 1940s and ’50s. It is an interesting story and tells about their struggles against sexism and against each other in a cruel and dirty business. There all here – Gladys “Killem” Gillem, Ida May Martinez, Penny Banner, The Fabulous Moolah, Ella Waldek and The Great Mae Young. The film mixes interviews, photos and archival film footage of real bouts, and clips from shows like To Tell the Truth and cheesy movies like Racket Girls – it’s good to hear these women laugh about their horror stories of life on the road. It’s making the rounds of the cable channels now and available at netflix and amazon.com.
